On the night of May 21, 2023, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Syracuse Police Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of West Newell Street in response to a reported stabbing incident.
A victim, identified as 16-year-old Shamek Bonner, was found by officers with injuries consistent with being stabbed by a sharp, bladed instrument. Members of the Syracuse Police Department, Syracuse Fire Department, and AMR paramedics took life-saving measures.
Bonner was transported to the hospital for further life saving measures, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
An investigation was commenced by CID Homicide Unit detectives, where numerous people were interviewed, and a neighborhood and citywide canvass was conducted. In addition, several search warrants were executed. After recovering the evidence, it was processed and analyzed thoroughly.
An 18-year-old suspect by the name of Richard Olschewske has been identified as a result of the aforementioned efforts. In a recent development, Olschewske was apprehended in the 2900 block of Erie Blvd East and was taken into custody without any untoward incident.
Olschewske was charged with one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree, and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, and lodged at the Onondaga County Justice Center.
