On May 21, 2023, around 11:30 p.m., Syracuse Police Officers responded to the 400 block of West Newell Street regarding a stabbing incident, the Syracuse Police Department said in a media release.
Officers located a victim, 16-year-old Shamek Bonner, suffering from injuries consistent with being stabbed by a sharp, bladed instrument. Life saving measures were undertaken by members of the Syracuse Police Department, Syracuse Fire Department and AMR paramedics. Bonner was transported to the hospital for further life saving measures, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased, police said.
An investigation was commenced by CID Homicide Unit detectives, where numerous people were interviewed, and a neighborhood and citywide canvass was conducted. In addition, several search warrants were executed. Evidence was recovered, processed and analyzed.
As a result of the above efforts, a suspect was identified as 18-year-old Richard Olschewske. Olschewske was located in the 2900 block of Erie Blvd East and taken into custody without incident.
Olschewske was charged with one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree, and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, and lodged at the Onondaga County Justice Center.
