An investigation is underway by the police regarding a quadruple shooting that took place in Over-the-Rhine during the early evening hours of Wednesday.
According to Cincinnati Chief of Police Teresa Theetge, three juveniles, aged 10, 14, and 15, were shot while walking down East McMicken Avenue near Lang Street beside Grant Park.
In broad daylight, a group of children were seen walking down the street. According to Theetge, the situation is deemed unacceptable. The speaker stated that they will continue to investigate the case until the responsible party is identified. The speaker confidently declared that the perpetrators will not escape punishment.
A male individual in his twenties has also been shot. According to police, the man was not believed to be with the juveniles at the time the gunfire erupted.
At Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the children are currently receiving medical care. An adult is currently receiving medical treatment at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
According to Theetge, all injuries sustained are non-life-threatening.
On Wednesday evening, Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval provided the following statement:
Following the shooting incident, Walnut Street was completely closed between Moore Street and East McMicken, while East McMicken was also fully closed between Lang and Main streets.
Over 59 evidence placards were found on the ground along McMicken and remained there for a duration of over two hours. According to reports, not all of the items found indicated shell casings.
According to police reports, surveillance footage has been reviewed and authorities are currently seeking a black four-door Hyundai with dark tinted windows. According to Theetge, there is a possibility of the involvement of multiple shooters.
According to a witness of the shooting, three children in a black car with blacked-out windows were seen approaching the scene. According to the woman, a child standing through the sunroof discharged a firearm. The woman’s car was struck by multiple bullets.
According to Theetge, the surveillance footage will be released at the earliest convenience.
According to CPD data spanning the past four years, Grant Park has been identified as a zone of concentrated violence and is considered the most perilous section of Over-the-Rhine.
According to recent data, approximately 21 percent of shooting incidents that have occurred since 2019 have taken place within close proximity to the park. Among these incidents are 10 fatal shootings, resulting in a total of 11 fatalities. The most recent of these fatal shootings occurred in September of 2021.
A $60 million plan is currently in the works by 3CDC and the city to revitalize the area from Grant Park to the upcoming Findlay Community Center.
According to a spokesperson from 3CDC, the project will involve the construction of a new state-of-the-art community center at Findlay Playground, along with the renovation of the OTR Rec Center and Grant Park. Additionally, street improvements to East McMicken are also planned.
According to the nonprofit developer, the project is expected to have a transformational impact on the area, similar to the effect that Washington Park had on the southern half of the neighborhood.
