On May 12, 2023, at 10:47 p.m., the Eau Claire Police Department received a report of a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of East Clairemont Avenue and Fairfax Street. This information was disclosed in the initial media release by the authorities.

According to the media release, a vehicle came to a halt at the eastbound traffic lights situated on Clairemont Avenue at Fairfax Street. According to eyewitnesses, a high-speed SUV collided with the rear of the car.

A vehicle was forcefully propelled through the intersection and collided with a traffic post. According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle in question was completely consumed by flames after it came to a halt. According to preliminary findings from the investigation, authorities suspect that both speed and alcohol may have played a role in the occurrence of the crash.

According to a media release, the individual behind the wheel of the SUV has been identified as 40-year-old Kenneth Van Meter, hailing from the Mondovi region, as per authorities.

As per the official media statement, Van Meter was transported to a medical facility to receive treatment for injuries sustained. A suspect by the name of Van Meter has been apprehended on suspicion of committing homicide by operating a vehicle while under the influence. Tragically, the driver of the vehicle passed away at the scene of the incident.
