Creek Couple Shot Dead in Landlord – Tenant Dispute at Stoney Creek
Terry Brekka Hamilton: Hamilton police are investigating after two people were shot and killed in Stoney Creek Saturday evening in what investigators are describing as a “landlord-tenant dispute.”
Det. Sgt. Steve Bereziuk said that at around 5:40 p.m. on Saturday, officers had responded to reports of a shooting at 322 Jones Rd., which is located just north of Barton Street.
Officers found two persons who had been shot to death outside the two-story house, which is tucked between Barton and Cornell Avenues, according to Bereziuk.
Witnesses told police that the victims were seen “fleeing the house” before they were killed outside of the residence, said Bereziuk. First responders were able to check on the victims, who were pronounced dead immediately, he noted.
The 28-year-old male and the 27-year-old woman who were shot were residents of the home’s basement flat, according to Bereziuk.
Their landlord, a 57-year-old guy, who lived upstairs, was the murder suspect.
The suspect had barricaded himself inside the house, the police discovered later.
According to Bereziuk, the individual had a number of firearms registered to him at that location. Both handguns and long weaponry, such as rifles, were among those used.
Regarding the quantity of ammo discovered in the house, Bereziuk declined to comment.
Negotiations with the man started when the Emergency Response Unit arrived on the site and a sizable area was cordoned off around the house.
This is a developing story, Investigations are still ongoing.
