According to Lt. Justin Hartman of the Lafayette Police Department, 23-year-old Trayshaun Smith was taken into custody on Thursday. This came after he had visited a hospital with a gunshot wound that was not considered life-threatening.
According to investigators, it has been determined that the incident involving the shooting of Smith and another victim, resulted from a three-year-old child gaining access to a firearm and discharging a single round. Both victims were subsequently hospitalized.
According to Hartman, it has been determined that a three-year-old child at the location accessed a gun and fired one round, striking two people.
According to the police department, two shooting victims were discovered by officers at the Franciscan Health Lafayette East Hospital. The victims were receiving medical attention for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. It has been reported that the shooting took place at an apartment complex located in Lafayette, Indiana.
According to Hartman, the second victim in the incident was identified as the mother of the child, while Smith was reported to be an acquaintance of the mother. According to reports, Smith has been taken into custody on the basis of an active murder warrant issued by Cook County, Illinois.
According to the Lafayette Police Department, they are currently working in conjunction with the Markham, Illinois police department in regards to the arrest. According to authorities, Lafayette is where Smith resides.
The arrest made by the Markham Police Department did not receive an immediate response from their representative upon request for comment.
