The Dorchester County Coroner has identified the swimmer who drowned in the Edisto River on Sunday.
Coroner Paul Brouthers has identified 19-year-old Luis Rodriguez-Garcia as the individual who drowned in the Edisto River near Givhans Ferry State Park while swimming.
On Monday afternoon, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, and Dorchester County Fire Rescue recovered the body of Rodriguez-Garcia.
On Sunday, search and recovery efforts were initiated following reports of a potential drowning incident. However, the search was interrupted by nightfall and the impending storms, which compelled the crews to halt their operations. The search resumed on Monday morning.
According to Lt. Rick Carson of DCSO, a male individual was swimming with friends in the middle of the river when he was spotted going under by someone.
According to reports, an autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday at MUSC. The investigation is being conducted by DCSO and the coroner’s office.
