Identified As Victim in Third Fatal Crash On US 287

The victim of a fatal crash on U.S. Highway 287 on Thursday night has been identified by officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety. This marks the fourth fatality resulting from crashes on the roadway since Mother’s Day.

A fatal accident occurred on US 287 near Iowa Park resulting in one casualty.

Sgt. Marc Couch from DPS has reported that a crash took place on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at approximately 9:20 p.m. The incident occurred on U.S. Highway 287, located to the west of the Harmony Road exit and west of Iowa Park.

According to the accident report from DPS, Sgt. Couch has stated that a 2019 Dodge pickup truck was left disabled in the left-hand lane of northbound U.S. 287 due to a prior crash. According to the individual, the roadway was damp and precipitation was occurring at the moment of the collision.

According to Sgt. Couch, a truck tractor hauling a semi-trailer was headed northbound on U.S. 287 in the left-hand lane when it neared the stationary pickup truck. A pickup was struck by a truck tractor.

According to Sergeant Couch, Robert Clayton Powell, aged 32 and a resident of Electra, was pronounced dead at the crash site. At 10:15 p.m., he was pronounced dead.

In a span of five days, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has confirmed four fatalities resulting from the third fatal crash on a section of U.S. Highway 287 since May 14, 2023.

Two individuals from Chillicothe lost their lives and three others were admitted to the hospital after a collision occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on U.S. 287, near the Rifle Range Road exit, just outside Wichita Falls on Sunday, May 14, 2023.

A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, as a 1-year-old lost their life in a crash on U.S. 287 near Electra, close to the Midway Church Road exit, shortly after noon.

According to recent reports, all three fatal accidents that have occurred on U.S. 287 since Sunday have involved a truck tractor that was pulling a semi-trailer in some capacity. Two fatal crashes occurred on U.S. 287, where a truck tractor collided with a disabled vehicle from a prior crash.
