Al-Hassan Aiyash, 22, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Gregory Kelly.
Wayne County Attorney Kim Worthy has filed charges against 22-year-old Al-Hassan Aiyash of Hamtramck in connection with the May 6 death of Gregory Kelly, 37, of Detroit, who was also at the gas station.
According to Worthy, Kelly and two other men at the gas station repeatedly begged Ayyash to open the door and let them out.
According to Worthy, Ayyash pressed the security button to open the door, but said nothing to the men for several seconds before the shooting began.
“Allegations that the defendant locked the store door and did not heed the men’s pleas for release led to tragic consequences in this case,” Worthy said in a statement.
Worthy said Ayyash was arrested on Thursday by the Detroit Police Department and is expected to appear in court on Friday morning.
It is unclear if Ayash has a lawyer who could comment on the allegations against him.
The man who allegedly shot Kelly, 27-year-old Samuel Anthony McCray, was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, and three counts of felony with a firearm and possession of a firearm.
The shooting took place after 3 am on 6 May. McCray tried to leave the gas station with less than $4 worth of items after being denied an e-buy, but then Ayyash locked the door, prosecutors said.
According to eyewitness David Langston, McCray threatened to shoot everyone at the gas station unless the door was opened.
