According to court records, on Thursday, a man pleaded guilty to assaulting Democratic Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota in February within the elevator of her Washington apartment building.
According to the court docket, Kendrid Khalil Hamlin has pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting a member of Congress and assaulting law enforcement officers. On the same day of Craig’s attack, Hamlin was accused of assaulting two officers as they tried to arrest him.
In an emailed statement, attorneys for Hamlin reported that he has taken responsibility for his actions and is hoping to move towards rehabilitation and receive the necessary mental health treatment.
According to the statement, treatment and rehabilitation are unlikely to take place in prison. According to Mr. Hamlin’s federal public defenders, Katie D’Adamo Guevara and Eugene Jeen-Young Kim Ohm, there is hope that all parties involved can collaborate to ensure that Mr. Hamlin receives mental health support and treatment, as well as stable housing upon his release.
According to a spokesperson for Craig, their office declined to provide any immediate comment.
According to court documents filed by a U.S. Capitol Police special agent, Craig was in the lobby of her building getting coffee when she observed a man pacing. According to the agent’s report, the man entered the elevator with her and stated that he needed to use the restroom and intended to enter her apartment.
According to court papers, following her statement that he was unable to do something, he reportedly punched her in the side of her face and seized her near the neck. She managed to flee by throwing her cup of hot coffee over her shoulder at him.

According to court documents, prosecutors have stated that Hamlin has multiple prior convictions, one of which was for assaulting a law enforcement officer.
In November, Craig secured a third term in the 2nd District, which spans from suburban to rural areas south of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
The House race was one of the most costly in the nation, and the GOP’s efforts to flip a Minnesota seat were thwarted. Despite their narrow majority in the House, Republicans were unable to defeat Craig.
