In a recent discovery, authorities in northern Mexico have uncovered 45 bags filled with human remains in a gorge located on the outskirts of Guadalajara. The officials are currently investigating the matter to determine the exact number of bodies present in the bags.
According to a statement released by the state prosecutor’s office in Jalisco on Wednesday night, the bags discovered at a forest overlook contained the remains of both men and women.
In a joint effort, firefighters and civil defense personnel utilized a helicopter to retrieve remains from the gorge. The recovery operation is set to continue in the upcoming days.
The discovery of human remains at a site has left authorities unsure if they belong to the seven young people who were reported missing last week.
The search for the missing individuals led to the discovery. According to the state prosecutor’s office, an investigation was conducted at the site following a report of potential body parts being present.
According to federal government data, Mexico has over 110,000 missing people, with Jalisco being the state with the highest number at 15,000. According to reports, there exist thousands of unidentified remains in various morgues and cemeteries.
