One Man Identified Dead After Shooting In Clintonville

One man has died after a shooting in Clintonville on Friday night.

Officers responded to the 3200 block of N. High Street at 9:18 p.m. after report of a shooting, according to the Columbus Division of Police. Officers found 22-year-old Jawaun Fain with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at 9:27 p.m.

In a Saturday morning update, Columbus police say that Fain was sitting inside when shots were fired into his apartment. One round went through the walls and hit Fain, per police.

The shooting marks the second fatal incident in Columbus on Friday after a 28-year-old man was shot in the King-Lincoln Bronzeville neighborhood at around 1:30 p.m. The two incidents coupled with a string violence in the Short North last weekend is causing residents to be apprehensive about visiting certain areas.

One group of friends that spoke to NBC4 on Friday decided the violence in the Short North was enough to keep them away.

“They asked me where we should go and I think usually when someone’s from out of town I would suggest let’s go to the short north but I suggested to come here because of the recent violence for sure,” said Samantha Glasser who helped choose the group’s destination for the evening, Columbus Brewing Company at East Market.

“We had a couple options we would go to Short North or do we come out here to the East market. [My friend is] a social worker, she’s very in tune with what’s going on in Columbus, she said absolutely not,” said Davi Wyers, another East Market visitor.

Longtime area resident Don Vanhoose said violence wouldn’t necessarily deter him from visiting the Short North. However, he said, “violence anywhere is concerning. Whether it’s Short North or anywhere else.”
