James Pierce,28, of Walterboro Died in Shooting, CCSO Released Dashcam Video of Charleston Shooting

Charleston County Shooting: The dashcam footage from a deadly deputy-involved shooting that took place on May 7 was made public by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) on Friday.

Deputies Evan Cubbage and Alexander Hodge in Ravenel stopped a black Crown Victoria before 4:00 p.m. for a traffic infringement.

Before asking the passenger to vacate the car, Deputy Cubbage approaches the passenger-side window and engages the driver and passenger in friendly conversation for little under seven minutes.

Deputy Cubbage seems to grab the passenger’s hands and tell him not to reach for anything as he exits the vehicle.

“He’s carrying a gun!” Deputy Hodge arrives, and Deputy Cubbage yells.

The man exits the vehicle and begins firing as the deputies rush to the driver’s side.]

Deputy Cubbage opens fire again from above the car before reversing and firing from the passenger side. Deputy Hodge runs off-screen and fires.

The suspect, James Pierce, 28, a resident of Walterboro, was struck and killed there.

Additionally, Deputy Cubbage was shot three times. He may be heard saying, “I’m hit!” Deputy Hodge inquires about the location of the strike, and Deputy Cubbage discloses his wounds.

Deputy Hodge further states that the deceased suspect needs assistance.

The driver screams, runs to the side of the road, and quickly exits the vehicle. A deputy shouts something at her.
