According to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, the death of a Chenango Valley High School student has been officially classified as an accident.
In the Town of Fenton, a fatal crash between a pedestrian and a train is currently under investigation by the sheriff’s office, as announced on Tuesday morning. Deputies investigated for hours, resulting in the closure of Crocker Hill Road and Depot Hill Road.
Seventeen-year-old Jakob McCloe of Port Crane has been identified as the student. According to reports, the individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the investigation, McCloe was walking in a westerly direction on the Norfolk Southern Railroad Tracks while wearing noise-canceling headphones. It was observed that he was unable to hear the train approaching. According to reports, the train’s engineer attempted to signal multiple times in an effort to capture the attention of McCloe. According to the sheriff’s office, McCloe remained oblivious to the approaching train.
According to the office, the train could not be stopped by the engineer, resulting in the unfortunate death of McCloe.
Sheriff Fred Akshar reported that, following a comprehensive examination of the location, extensive questioning, and a review of train camera footage, detectives have concluded that the recent loss of life was simply a tragic accident. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office expressed their condolences to the family, friends, and school community of Jakob McCloe.
On Tuesday, the Chenango Valley School District issued a letter to families regarding the death of McCloe.
According to a letter signed by Superintendant Jennifer Ostrander, the community is going through a tough time and they extend their thoughts and condolences to the family and loved ones of the student. The spokesperson requested that the family’s privacy be honored during this challenging period. They also urged the community to unite and provide their sympathies and assistance.
According to the letter, emotional support is available through the guidance office in the form of counselors and services.
